In 2022, the Farnborough Winter Half Marathon returned to its traditional date at the end of January. After a brief sojurn as a summer Half in 2021 we were delighted to be back as a winter event. For those who remember the icy chill conditions of the inaugural event in 2017 or the snow of 2018, the weather in 2022 was positively balmy. The upside to those 'warmer conditions' were some phenomenal times, at the front and all the way down the field: there were four runners under 65 minutes - all inside the old course record - and nearly 200 inside 90 minutes.Â
Farnborough is generally the first major half marathon of the season so the weather will always be a roll of the dice in January, but now we  know just how fast the route is, we expect it to be even more popular than usual. The 2023 race is now confirmed as a qualifying race for the England Athletics Masters Programme, giving Masters Athletes an opportunity to earn their England Age Group Masters vest. See here for more details.
For those of you not familar with the route, it is a fast, largely flat, traffic-free course, starting and finishing at the historic Airship Hangar adjacent to Farnborough Airport. It is the same route as the previous three editions, taking in a delightful semi-rural circuit which broadly circles Farnborough airport in an anti-clockwise direction.
From its inception in 2017 the event has been very popular with local runners and those from further afield looking for an early race to test their winter fitness. The main race is limited to 2500 runners and generally sells out early so don't delay if you are thinking of running. Entries will be closed when we have reached our limit. Since it helps with our planning we incentivize you to enter early, so as well as the early bird price which runs until November 30, this year there is an even cheaper introductory price that runs until June 30.Â
As in 2022 the event will also incorporate a 5K, which uses part of the same route, starting 20 minutes after the half marathon. That in turn is followed by a children's run, a free to enter 800m Fun Run on an out-and-back section of the first part of the half marathon course.
All entries that we receive before Christmas 2022 will receive there number and timing chip in the post. If there are still entries remaining after Christmas, late entries will be for collection on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st January from the Village Hotel in Farnborough or at the event village on the morning of the event from 7.30am.
Â
A prize-giving ceremony for the first three male and female runners will take place as soon as possible after lead runners finish. Masters prizes will be sent out after the race when we have finalised all the results. Prizes will be commemorative wooden trophies and product vouchers.
