The Surrey Bacchus Marathon and Half Marathon returns - your chance to enjoy England’s premier Wine Marathon with six tasting stations over the Half Marathon and twelve over the full Marathon.
Half of the route is inside the beautiful Denbies Wine Estate and the other half through National Trust Countryside and woodland along the Pilgrims Way and North Downs Way. It's a demanding route, but you'll have suitable respite at each of the sampling stations, then at the finish enjoy the party at the Hog Roast (Not included for the children’s run)
New for 2018 we introduce a 5 mile event that you can run, jog or walk. The route will be within Denbies Vineyard, through the vines and offers magnificent views - one wine sample station will be reached and the Hog Roast is included. This is a non-competitive activity and will not have timing - it's just a chance to enjoy the day.
As England’s largest vineyard Denbies Wine Estate has been producing award winning wines since 1986. It is the first wine estate in the world to give visitors of all ages a unique and fascinating insight into all aspects of the wine producing process, all year round, with indoor and outdoor tours and tastings.
The vineyards of Denbies Estate are situated on the North Downs with its famous chalky soil, in a protected valley of south facing slopes.
The venue has secure baggage, toilets and changing facilities (sorry, no showers). Refreshments are available for purchase from the restaurant and a post-race Hog Roast will be included in your entry for those in the Full, Half or 5 Mile events. Friends, family and supporters are welcome to spend the day at Denbies with indoor wine tasting, art gallery, Farm Shop, Wine and Gift Shop and public footpath trails. Entry to the estate is free of charge. The Hog roast can be purchased on the day for non-participants.
Finishers of the Full and Half Marathon will be presented with a technical t-shirt (available in Small, Medium, Large or X-large), medal, post-race hog roast and complimentary drink on completion of the race.
Entrants for the full or half marathon must be 18 years or older.
Runners and walkers in the 5 miles will reach one sample station and participants 18 or over can sample one of the wines - those under the legal age to drink alcohol will have a different number but we will have a soft drink available instead). The Hog roast is included in the entry fee but the T-shirt is an additional cost of £10.
Children's 2 mile Fun Run - for children under the age of 12 - a pure fun run free of charge and no timing but each will receive a medal.
There will be 6 start waves, the first for the Full Marathon runners starting at 9.30am, followed by 5 for the Half Marathon at 15 minute intervals with 500 in each. You will need to pre-select your wave so that you can be sure of starting with your friends. The maximum number in any single wave will be 500 runners.

The route is one lap (Half) or two laps (Full) and starts and finishes at the main building inside Denbies Vineyard near Dorking, Surrey. The route is undulating and hilly in places as it is on the escarpment of the North Downs. Nearly all of the route is on trails taking in sections of the Pilgrims Way and North Downs Way with just the last 2 miles on hard road surfaces.
Using footpaths along the North Downs Way, you will be guaranteed breath-taking views over the Mole Valley, Ranmore Common and the North Downs.
MARATHON CUT OFF TIME
So that we can safely manage the route and the drink sampling stations we have been advised we should have a cut off time in the Full Marathon of 5 hours. Runners who do not reach the half way point by 2hrs 20mins will be asked to finish at the Half Marathon and will receive a Half-Marthon medal. Our last person marshal will start to break down the route following the final wave starts and unfortunately we will not be able to offer drink station or medical support to any runners who continue after the cut off.
For 2018, as well as ample toilets at the start/finish toilets, we will have portable toilets on the route at three differnet locations.
As we are not running on any public highways, although there is one road to cross in two places, we allow headphones to be used but it is your responsibility to make sure you hear any instructions by marshals will be worn entirely at the runners risk.
