Those who know their marathon history will know that marathon running in Italy goes way back before the days of Dorando Pietri, hero of the 1908 London Olympics - in fact it was this history that inspired Pietri to his great performances.
Turin is part of that history, with the first Turin Marathon being held in 1897 - now we offer the opportunity to take part in the modern incarnation of the race.
As the first capital city and birth place of the modern Italy, Turin is intriguing. The city centre is the Piazza Castello, which has a unique atmosphere with remarkable baroque architecture, which forms the backdrop for the start and finish line of the marathon.
From Piazza Castello the route follows the River Po through the outlying villages of Moncalieri, Nichelino, Beinasco, Orbassano, Rivalta, Rivoli and Collegno, finally returning to the city centre on a gentle down hill. Further info from the race website.
Fine food, drink, easy access from low cost airlines and a very underrated marathon - what more reason do you need for a short break to discover Turin.
