2 SEP 2012: FJORD HALF MARATHON & 10KM, BERGEN, NORWAY
DETAILS OF THE EVENT PASSED
By the standards of this uncrowded country Bergen is a massive expanse of urbanity. But, for everyone except a Norwegian, this city of 250,000 inhabitants is a pleasant, almost quaint, settlement of fascinating historical interest, surrounded by pristine countryside and enjoying the twin Norwegian benefits of crystal-clear coastal waters and air so pure it's intoxicating.
A rare intact example of a Hanseatic port, this was once one of the major trading towns of the influential merchants' guild that stretched across Europe in the early-17th century. Bergen in fact kept on the Hanseatic tradition long after the guild had lost influence elsewhere, and the Bryggen is the legacy of the wealthy traders that had their homes here. These wooden gable-fronted houses on the edge of the wharf look every inch their three centuries' age, and are deservedly covered under a UNESCO world heritage status. Now home to shops and restaurants, browsing the Bryggen is a must.
The Races
This is a weekend of great racing with the Half Marathon taking place on Saturday afternoon and the 5km and 10km on Sunday afternoon, plus supporting children's races and a walk through the countryside for those not up to racing. Over 7000 runner's take part across the events, many doing the combination of Half Marathon and 10km or Half and 5km.
