The world of elite marathon running is dominated by African athletes but few of the continent's marathon events would qualify as elite. The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is one of the the exceptions. It's a world class event and after going through two years of qualification as a candidate race, we expect the 2026 event to be Africa's first Abbott Marathon Major and the world's eighth 'Major'.
The race itself is a fantastic celebration of the cultural diversity of South Africa, showcasing what can be achieved when the country unites behind a common purpose. Cape Town, known as the ‘Mother City’ has a long and well-documented history as a destination city of choice for the discerning traveller. Its appeal speaks for itself. Other than running the race, there is plenty to see and do while you are in this beautiful coastal city with numerous internationally acclaimed restaurants, shops and attractions.
Note: We are selling our 2026 Sanlam Cape Town Marathon packages before the 2025 race has happened and before the event has been confirmed as a new Abbott World Marathon Major. We are confident that the event will pass the final step in it's qualification process and will be confirmed as the 8th Abbott World Marathon Major later this year. In the unlikely event that the race does not pass the final qualfication step, you will be able to cancel your booking and take a full refund of any money paid as a deposit.
SOUTHERN SUN CAPE SUN 4*
The Southern Sun Cape Sun is located in the centre of Cape Town a short walk from the start/finish of the Marathon near the DHL Stadium, which also hosts the Marathon Expo. Our representative will be staying with you at this hotel.
The hotel also features a fitness centre and a splash pool. All of the spacious, air-conditioned rooms at the Southern Sun Cape Sun feature views of either Table Mountain, Robben Island or Table Bay. Each room has an antique-style décor and are en suite with a bath and shower.
A buffet breakfast is served daily, with lunch and dinner available at Riempies Restaurant. The cuisine combines the modern and traditional and reflects the region’s Cape Dutch heritage.
TOUR ITINERARY
THURSDAY 21 MAY
Welcome to Cape Town! Make your way from the airport to the hotel and check in. Usually, hotel rooms are ready after 3:00pm, if you arrive earlier you can leave your luggage at the hotel. The Southern Sun Cape Sun is a short walk distance to all race activities and surrounded by top quality restaurants and entertainment. Between 10:00-3:00pm our representative will be waiting in the lobby to greet you and answer any questions you might have.
FRIDAY 22 MAY
This morning after breakfast we take you the short distance on foot to the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon Expo. Pick up your bib and explore the stalls before making your own way back to the hotel at your leisure.
In the evening join us at a local restaturant for a fun filled evening of interactive enterainment and African food. You'll have a chance to try your hand at djembe drumming before the professionals entertain you during dinner where you can sample a range of foods from a Cape Malay menu.
SATURDAY 23 MAY
This morning after breakfast you are welcome to join us for a light shake-out run along the harbour and Sea Point Promenade. This will be at an easy pace and is a chance to loosen your legs. It will be no longer than 5km (approx. 3 miles). Enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.
SUNDAY 24 MAY
Race day is here! After an early breakfast, meet our representatives whoi will be in the hotel lobby. We will have transport from the hotel to the start village near the DHL stadium.
After the race, recharge in the finish village, International tent. Meet up here to find your family and friends or meet them back at the hotel. There will be transport back from the finish to the hotel.
This evening meet up in the hotel bar for a post drink to celebrate your amazing accomplishment!
MONDAY 25 MAY
Unless you have booked extra nights with us then today is the day you check out of your room and say goodbye to South Africa.
