Amongst oenphiles English wine, particularly sparklign wine, has been an open secret for some time. Our soild conditions are the same as the Champagne region of northern France and our weather is better. Don't take the a wine connoisseur's view, better to find out for yourself. We will be serving lots of it at Denbies Vineyard on Sunday September 7 when we host our annual Bacchus Wine Half Marathon and 10K, an event that is fast becoming as legendary with British runners as Champagne remains (for now at least) with our wine drinkers.
Set in stunning surroundings off the North Downs, Bacchus is one of the must-do events on the UK running calendar. Most of the field turn out in fancy dress, there are bands and other musical entertainment around the course, but it's the drinks stations on route that separates Bacchus from other running races and epitomise the spirit of the event.
Half-marathon runners will have the chance to sample six fabulous award-winning English wines, at five drinks stations along the course (you visit one station twice going out and coming back) with food and soft drinks to accompany them. If you are running the 10K you'll visit two of the wine stations. For all runners there's more food, drink and music waiting for you at the finish at the post-race party where the party carries into the evening evening, or whenever everyone goes home. Non-running friends or supporters can purchase the same food and drinks at the post-race hog roast and join the party.
VOLUNTEERS
We are always looking for extra volunteers who can help at the start/finish area with late registration, hand out medals and T-shirts at the finish or to serve drinks and food at the drinks stations. It's a fun way to take part in the event if you are not running and all our volunteers receive free entry to one of our future UK events, a goody bag of products and a ticket to the post-race hog-roast. Send a note to info@209events.com if you are interested in being a party of our race team on the day.
Finishers of the Half Marathon will receive a souvenir technical t-shirt (available in XS, S, M, L, XL or XL), a superb commemorative medal and a ticket to the post-race party where food and complimentary drink are offered. Entrants for the Half Marathon are required to be 18 years or older.
Runners in the 10K will visit two wine stations and participants over 18 years old can sample two different wines - those under the legal age to drink alcohol (identified by special markings on the numbers) will have a choice of soft drinks available instead. A post race party ticket is included in the 10K entry fee but the T-shirt is an additional cost of £12 if ordered in advance or £15 on the day, subject to availability.
Pre-ordered T-shirt sizes will be printed on race numbers in the Half Marathon and for those in the 10K who purchase the T-shirt in advance. 10K who do not wish to purchase will have NO T-SHIRT printed on their race number so there is no confusion at the finish line where T-shirts will be distributed.
2km Fun Run - for children under the age of 12 - a pure fun run is free of charge, there is no timing but each participant will receive a medal, a drink and some sweets. Since the event is free, we will open entries to teh Fun Run the week before the race. Adults can run or walk with their children but will not receive a medal at the finish.
Participants in all events will also receive access to free post-race photographs via digital download.
Race entries close on Wednesday 3rd September at 12:00pm or sooner if entires sell out early (No entries will be taken after this time).
RACE HQ
As England’s largest vineyard, Denbies Wine Estate has been producing award-winning wines since 1986. It is the first wine estate in the world to give visitors of all ages a unique and fascinating insight into all aspects of the wine-producing process, all year round, with indoor and outdoor tours and tastings. The vineyards of Denbies Estate are situated on the North Downs with its famous chalky soil, in a protected valley of south-facing slopes.
The venue has secure baggage, toilets and changing facilities (sorry, no showers). Refreshments are available for purchase from the restaurant and a post-race party ticket is included in your entry for those in the Half Marathon or 10km. Friends, family and supporters are welcome to spend the day at Denbies with indoor wine tasting, an art gallery, Farm Shop, Wine and Gift Shop and public footpath trails. Entry to the estate and parking is free of charge. The Hog roast can be purchased on the day for non-participants and children in the 2km fun run.

THE ROUTE
The Half Marathon is one lap and starts and finishes in front of the main building inside Denbies Vineyard near Dorking, Surrey. The route is undulating and extremely hilly in places as it is on the escarpment of the North Downs. Nearly all of the route is on trails, some smooth, some rugged, taking in sections of the Pilgrims Way and North Downs Way.
Using footpaths along the North Downs Way, you will be guaranteed breath-taking views over the Mole Valley, Ranmore Common and the North Downs.
The 10km starts and finishes in the same place follows the start of the Half Marathon route for the first few miles before coming back through the vineyards to the finish.
START WAVES
In 2025 there will be eleven start waves, the first six for the Half Marathon runners starting at 9:30am . Subsequent waves will be set off in 10 minute intervals. There will be four 10K start waves starting at 10:30am. You will need to pre-select your wave so that you can be sure of starting with your friends. The children's fun run has one start wave at 11:05am.

TOILETS
For 2025, as well as ample toilets in the car park and behind the main building at the start/finish area, we will have portable toilets on the route at one location which is accessible from differnet parts of the course.
CUT OFFS
We don't have formal cut offs for the event, it is not really in the spirit of Bacchus, but we do have tail walkers who are following the half marathon route start 11.15am. They will be clearing away the course and aim to finish at 3pm, which give you between up to five and half hours to complete the half marathon depending on when you start.
BAGGAGE
There is a secure baggage area behind the main marquee to the right of Denbies main building. You will be asked to approach the start by walking through the marquee and will therefore pass the baggage area on your way to the start. After finishing you reverse your direction and pass the baggage again before entering the marquee, which hosts the post-race hog roast.
MUSICAL ENTERTAINMENT
There will be bands or musical entertainment at each of the drinks stations and on other sections of the course. There will also be a DJ playing at The Hog Roast in the finish area.
HEADPHONE POLICY
As we are not running on any public highways (although there is one road to cross in two places) we allow headphones to be used but it is your responsibility to make sure you listen to any instructions by marshals and you wear headphones entirely at your own risk.
