TCS NEW YORK CITY MARATHON, USA

Date: 1 November 2026

The TCS New York City Marathon is the 'Big Daddy' of big City Marathons. It is the model many other mass participation races have followed and with good reason. The TCS New York City Marathon is the 'Big Daddy' of big City Marathons. It is the model many other mass participation races have followed and with good reason. New York is an event you will never forget: the mass start over the two-mile expanse of the Verazzano Narrows Bridge is stunning. The main route through the five boroughs of the City is like a little cultural tour through New York and the last few miles on the rolling hills of Central Park are one of running's most iconic finishes. Every runner should experience this event at least once in their running lifetime, although many come back year after year and with more international runners than any other event, it is genuinely the race where the world comes to run.

We are delighted to once again be part of the event's International Travel Operator Programme, as we have been for over 30 years. The 2026 race is special, it is the 50th anniversay of the Five Boroughs marathon. The first few editions of the New York City Marathon were run entirely in Manhattan as laps of Central Park. It moved on to it present course in 1976.

We have a limited block of guaranteed entries to the race, which are available to purchase with one of our travel packages. This year we are only offering Hotel and Entry packages but we have expanded our options to three hotels: the Westin and the Edison, which are both near Times Square and the Warwick, our main hotel, which is a short walk from the marathon finish line on Central Park West.

The 2025 TCS New York City Marathon was the largest in history with 59,226 finishes, surprisingly for a race on that scale the organisation dealt with those numbers remarkably well, largley due to the wave starts. It helped that conditions in 2025 were near perfect for fast times, although don't bet on it being the same this year, the weather in New York in late autumn is notorioulsly hard to predict. What we can predict is that demand for places will be intense and we expect that the '50th' anniversary celebrations will only increase the pressure for one of these coveted spots.

TRANSPORTATION TO THE START

You could argue that one of the hardest things about running the New York City Marathon is not the 26.2 miles you have to run but simply travelling to the start. Due to the event's point-to-point route which winds its way through the five boroughs of the City, the start area, on Staten Island near the base of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, is some distance from the finish. Since most international runners are staying in hotels in midtown Manhattan the journey to Staten Island can take up to three hours.

There are three official transportation options: a Midtown bus, the Staten Island ferry or the Midtown Ferry.

The timing of the transport you take will depend on your start wave, which is dictated by your predicted finish time. Unfortunately, you have to choose the start transportation before your start wave is confirmed. In 2025 there were five start waves 9:10; 9:45; 10:20; 10:55; 11.30 and we would expect something similar in 2026.

The journey to the start takes between 90-120 minutes but can take longer depending on traffic.

The official buses which leave the New York public library, depart between 5-6.30am on race morning because they have to arruve at Staten Island before the roads are closed to accommodate the first wave runners.

The Staten Island Ferry leaves from the bottom of Manhattan, it has a number of sailings in the morning and is accessible by subway.

The Midtown Ferry, or ITO Ferry, is the quickest way to the start and also means you can leave the hotel much later than other start transport options. It is available only to runners who are travelling with an ITO partner, such as 2:09 Events. It is a smaller ferry than the Staten Island Ferry so places are limited and demand is high. You will have the option to use any of the three official transport options when you register, but the Midtown Ferry will fill quicker than the other options, which is another reason to enter early.

If you book one of our packages at the Westin or the Warwick, we will provide a private group transfer from your hotel direct to the 6am, 7am, 8.30/9am Midtown ferry. This is only available to people who have booked one of our guaranteed entries and package at the Westin or the Warwick. We will provide guides and guidance to those using the Staten Island Ferry or official bus services but we are only running a shuttle to the Midtown Ferry from those hotels.

If you book to stay at the Edison Hotel, all 3 transportation options will be available to select. We will provide guidance but you have to make your own way to your preferred transportation option.

PARTNERS, FAMILY & FRIENDS

If you are travelling with non-runners, you need not worry about them on race day. They are invited to walk down with us to our spectator spot on First Avenue between the 16 and 17-mile points. We walk as a group from our hotels and we generally have 30-40 people in the group. It is crowded on Frist Avenue but we will do our best to find an open spot. From First Avenue, it's a short walk across to Central Park where your supporters can see you come through between miles 24-25 near Central Park Zoo. So any spectators will have two chances to see their runners in Manhattan.
